Looking to better understand your organization’s employee experience?
Do you know how your staff feel about their work, their team, and your organization? Are you looking for a simple way to identify what is going well, and where your organization may need additional support?
The Shelter 16 (S16) is a free, brief employee survey designed specifically for animal welfare organizations. In less than 5 minutes, employees can share their perspectives on key areas of workplace health, including engagement, satisfaction, communication, teamwork, leadership, training, and resources.
What is the S16?
The S16 provides a fast and practical snapshot of your organization’s health from an employee perspective. It is designed to be simple for shelters to administer, easy for employees to complete, and useful for leaders who want to make informed improvements.
Once your organization is approved, you will receive a unique survey link, employee invitation and reminder templates, and an aggregated Results Report highlighting overall strengths and areas for improvement. Individual employee responses are completely anonymous.
How can S16 help your organization?
The goal of S16 is not just to collect data. The goal is to help leaders better understand the employee experience and identify practical ways to strengthen their organization. Along with your Results Report, you will receive access to a Best Practices Recommendation Guide with evidence-informed suggestions for supporting employee engagement and satisfaction.
Thanks to the support of our sponsors, S16 services are completely free for participating organizations.

The S16 was developed using best practices, key learnings from the Shelter Employee Engagement System (SeeDS) and subject matter expertise in organizational science and animal welfare. The survey is operated and maintained by graduate students and faculty in the Organizational Science doctoral program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. No one outside of the University team will see individual or shelter results without the express permission of the participating shelter.
